My mums new boyfriend - Trailer analysis

1: Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to estabilsh the film's genre?
The film genre is comedy action and romance, and the trailer helps establish this to us as the audience through the way media language is used. characters is a main way this is portrayed, as only from the trailer we can see that the main female role/ character of the "mother" is made to be amusing for instance at the beginning of the trailer she fall's over and ask's her son "am i dead?" this kind of light hearted humour reflects the film genre as being comedy and the fact that she is dating a criminal and her son knows, yet this kind of serious situation i made be to funny even through her son also connotes the theme of comedy. The action is shown through the fast paced scenes of the trailer, such as the car speeding and the guns used and a few shots of a fight scene were shown, this immediately suggests to the audience that the film is action and will have scenes of complete full on action, yet the film seems to be based on a couple's romance and the gradual falling in love of criminal, with scenes of romantic kissing under nights sky and sexual connotations also hinting to us the genre of romance.

2: Media Representations: How is 'The Family' represented in this trailer?
He whole theme of family is taken lightly in the text yet there still is family shown, for instance even though the mother seams to be a single parent and there is no sign of a father connoting he idea of a broken family and no sense of a nuclear family, on the other hand the fact that the son leaves at the beginning of the trailer, yet when he comes back he still comes back to his family home and back to his mother still manages to keep the whole form of family unity relevant throughout the text. another scene where the family is represented is through the role of the "Mother" as she's been portrayed as more immature and pretty dopey, as if the roles of parent and child have been switched and the son is made to be more responsible than the parent, this can be shown in the way the life of the mother is presented to us, as she has a boyfriend is going to parties and acting "rebellious" and drunk in fast cars with a criminal, she is shown to have no parental responsibilities or even a responsibly adults life. where as the son seems to be the more firm hold of the family as he has a well respected job as an FBI Agent and seems to be more in control when it comes to being responsible, and even though its part of his job, when he hears the danger his mums in with the reckless driving his automatic response is "MY MUMS IN THAT CAR" Suggesting his idea of family values comes first.

Media Confrance Notes:

David Buckingham:

  • Mediated events, The Media had a lot of control and provoke during the riots this was mainly done through social networking and social media such as Twitter, Bbm and facebook and the news. During the Riots the main uprour was due to how the news and newpapers represnted the youth at the time, the youngsters of  London were portrayed as hood's wearing hoodies, "Bent on desruction" They were described as uncivilised with "No social value" or care for there streets, homes or anyone including total lack of respect for everyone including themselves. Words mostly used throughout the Media and news was "Thugs" and "Chavs". "Chaves which actully are working class young people, where as most of the people convicted of crimes and taken in were middle class eventough working class and race wise, black people was made to take the blmae, this was mainly done through how the media portrayed the people involved.

Representing youth:
  • IPSO's MORI Survey 2005: 40% crime violence and anti-social, 71% negetive
Blaming Media:
  • The media was too quick to put blame on a certain group of individuals who interact with pop culture, rap music and underground. Violent video games were also used to blame and create fear umungst London and even the whole of the UK and its advertisment consumers.
Daily mail "Rap music raves about drugs, violence  and game culture"
Daily mirror "Thugs used social networking sites to get riots going"
  • it could be said to be true that the Media did portray this certain group if individuals as the ones to balme, as the public trust the media corporations such as the BBC and newspapers
  • An iconic image used by both the daily mail and the daily mirror days after the riots, thi simage became an iconic image throughout the Media as it was a prime exanexample of who the media wanted to blame for the mass looting and violence involved within riotes of London 2011

The portrayal of family in Brick Lane, 453 words.

Monica Ali overall portrays the family in Brick Lane as strong, but like all families they have issues and problems, most to do with the broken culture most shown in the eldest daughter and the protagonist. The motherly role of the protagonist is shown to be very week and unresponsive throughout the beginning of the film where she is in her own world and her mind stuck in her home land of Bangladesh and her constant reminiscing of her sister as she feels she is not where she belongs; "Take me out of the darkness and give me the light" even as she prays she prays for home and be back where she belongs, in the "light" of her country.
The family may be together in one family home but it is as though they are slowly breaking apart, as every character has a different idea of home, yet due to the fact that the bond between the eldest daughter and the mother is really strong and shown in many scenes through the film, an example of this would be towards the end after the mother is chasing her daughter in the streets of London, and one on the underground the daughter looks at her mother and falls to her knees, this represents the final breakage the opposing culture's have had on the family, and she fall's as though surrendering into the arms of her mother.
Another Bengali family that’s introduced in the film is the family across the block, and the way Monica Ali has set out the film makes us as the audience see view this family through the eyes of the protagonist, and a key feature if this is that this family is way more westernised then we have previously seen, the mother of the family is a constant smoker, and the first time we see her light up a cigarette is extremely iconic of the culture change as we see her reaction which reflects the reaction of the audience, as though it is something abnormal to us who live in a very western society, smoking is considered acceptable and vey common.
There are also many aspects o the narrative that portray the family in a stronger light, such as after the affair, there were no arguments over it, and although the husband/father knew of the affair he had almost blocked it out as though it is unacceptable and something that could bring shame upon his manhood or the family. The fact that the affair wasn’t mentioned in the family shows the strength of the marriage and how the parents managed to keep the family together even after such a dramatic thing that could have teared the whole family apart.

Film Overview

Section A;

1: List the stages a film goes through from the initial idea to exhibition in the cinema
  • Someone comes up with the basic narrative/idea for a film
  • They then find a way to make that idea/narrative interesting and grabbing for an audience
  • A company then invests with buying the rights to the film
  • A team is then brought together to make and direct the actual film screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew
  • The film is made and perfected then sent of to the studio
  • The studio and the distribution company then join an agreement,
  • The distribution company decides how many copies of the film is to be made
  • The distributors then screen the film to the potential buyers
  • Both the buyers and the distribution company negotiate and handle the leasing agreements
  • The perfected print copies are sent to the theatres a number of weeks before the official opening day
  • The theatre then views the film for specified length of time, called an engagement period.
  • The Audience then buy the ticket and get to watch the film
  • At the end of the engagement, the print is sent back to the distributors where a lease agreement payment is made.

2: What is film distribution? Write a careful explanation.

  • Film distribution is the process where basic idea of the film actually becomes the film and is made available for the audience to watch the lease agreement, the negotiating, the finance.

3: What was the Hollywood 'studio system' in the 1930's and 40's?

  • During these years the Hollywood system was created by five major studios known to the public as the Big Five which includes studios such as MGM, 20th century fox, Warner Bros, Paramount and lastly RKO Radio pictures. This meant that this companies would invest a great deal of money to recruit groom and stars who possessed the talent potential, this meant that ordinary people could become stars in up coming movies.

4: In what ways is the process of film production, distribution and exhibition different today?

  • The way the whole industry of film has changed over the years is major and this is mainly through the mass development of technology and the fast updating of new technology in which films can be made quicker then before and with a much higher standard or quality, and example of this would be Avatar which even 30 years back would not have been seen as possible. yet this evolution of technology comes with its negatives for the screening industries as so much is now available through the internet, with free movie websites that can be watched at home which is now major competition for cinema's as films can be watched else where and blockbusters because audiences no longer have to wait for the legal release of a film in order to see it.

5: Write a definition of the following and give two examples for each term:
  • Horizontal integration; When a brand or company expands its business into different products that are similar by developing in the same process of marketing or distribution.

Example;
  • Vertical integration; When a brand or company expands its business into areas that are at different points of the same production paths.

Example;

To what extent is The opening of Children of Men ‘cinematic genius’.

The fist 10 mins of Children and men is cinematic genius, as it does not only strait away engage the audience it also makes you want to watch more which should be the pure purpose of films. I believe the target audience for "Children of men" is between 16-35 as it is a more sophisticated scientific based narrative with some strong language. From the first 10mins i can already tell that the narrative is that the world has had 2 whole decades of human infertility and the distress this has caused upon mankind. I believe it was an extremely engaging was to bring in the narrative with the "death of the youngest" human as it automatically leaves the audience with a yearning to know why? and how? and what brang upon this tragedy?
The view this text represents is that off all, as so far the text had followed around a normal looking man around early 30's with a 9-5 job, this connotes the idea the film has been created for all and no specific class or society of people.
The CGI used during the explosion is what makes the first scene such a 'cinematic genius' as it allows the audience to experience being in that position themselves and therefore drawing the audience in.

1. Decide whether you think celebrities should recieve payouts for having thier voicemails tapped - they put themselves out there in the first place so should our access to their lives be limitless?
Yes i think that even celebs have the same rights as a human, and privacy is a basic human right, and should apply to anyone weather wealthy or not, human rights apply to everyone. even celebs. Another reason could be that, even though celebs choose to put there selves out in the spot light of media and the public, they do not choose to have there privacy breached as even celebs have a limit to how much of there private life they want to be leaked and by phone hacking it just doesnt breach this limit it also exposes secrets that shouldnt be exposed and could lead to much worse senarioes such as the "Milly Dowler" case where it lead to much more anger and heartbreak then the "News iof the world" could have ever imagined.

3. Access one or two of his publications and examine the representation of this case by media that he controls.
The fact that these are both average publications of the "News of the world" just shows how much of a gossipy newspaper it was. firstly the idea that the main news tends to be onm the front page of a newspaper and the fact that the main headlines are to do with gossip, eg: 'Prince Harrys split with Chelsy'.

Texual Analysis of the 'Snikers' Advert.

The way the advert has been layed out and made to look is all made to form a certain reaction from the  audiance, and every detail is a form of advertisment and persuasion. The fact that Mr T Is such an iconic sterotypical 'Man' automatically integiues and attracts audiance, and the fact that the insutution decided to give him that expression is another way  the advert ingages with the audiance as his facial expression connotes anger and the 'Tough guy' persona which the population oif the audiance would most likely relate to Mr T. The audiance for this Ad is most likely to be between the ages of 16-30, Male.

The colours and layout is a way of putting the message the insitution wants across, the fact that the left hand and Snikers Bar is presented as 3D and coming of the screen and toward the audiance is another effect used to strike the audiance with the advert which relates backl to the target audiance and colours used, the coours are dark and could be seen as being more masculine with colours like black, red and gold and the blue  writting of 'Snikers' being in a big chunky font is also another factor that reflects the audiance profile the ad is aimed at.

The Distrubuters of the advert is the 'Snikers' company, and the fact that they produced a poster as a promotion platform connotes that the audiance could already be aware of 'Snikers' and the fact that they use such Mr T as there main marketing point, so not much information was needed for the audiance to understand the advert.
Interestingly the idea behind the fact that they choose to use 'GET SOME NUTS!' automatically leaves an imprint on the audiance, and is a typical way of Iconography and relates strait to Mr T and because 'Snikers' is such a large institution and globally known it all ties together when advertising the Chocolate bar.
The fact that the lighting used is also Low key lighting and the fact that the main spot light is fixated on Mr T and the 'Snikers' bar connnotes that they are central and most important within the Mise-on-Scene of the advert.

Twiiter Doc Screening!

I think the Twitter Doc would be an amazing thing to screen, but aswell as help us with oue Media Studies and to understand twitter, i think it would help us and other youngesters who use Twitter to know the more benifits or even default's of using these social networking sites, to which there are dangers and they need to be made aware, but one the other hand there could be life changing possitives; take Jamal Edwards; who became "Britains Youngest and Newsest Entrepreneur" through Youtube and currently has his own Channel and is his own boss, advertised in Google Chrome advert.

Choose a text and Apply two key concepts.

Representation:
The representation of different groups and stereotyping is very strongly put across through this media text as it shows the female sex group as nothing more than useful objects using religion. The fact that the text below was said to be written in the kitchen is ironic and represents females as they were to be used as maids... as if they were un-equal to Males or even created for the male sex, hence "Make me a sandwich"- Ordering the female around as though she is his property.
Genre:
The genre of the text is to put forward a perticular stereotype, In this case that "Women belong in the kitchen". Its could also be seen as to be humorous as all other stereotypes are made to be seen. This could also be seen as intertextuality with the image that has been altered to present a certain message.

Media Studies.. What i have learnt!

What have i learnt this year? Well I've mostly learnt how to intensely and thoughtfully analyse Media texts which was my biggest downfall in Media. another thing i have learnt is that there is more to TV and magazines and other Media platforms that to just entertain people.. Media texts have also other purposes such as, for personal identity or even just to be a way to interact socially with others, create conversation.
I have gained allot from Media this year so far.. and as the lessons go on, media helps me not only to gain a A-Level but to also understand the world around me and the purpose of everything.. Because everything is a Media Text.
Thankx's :)
