Film Overview

Section A;

1: List the stages a film goes through from the initial idea to exhibition in the cinema
  • Someone comes up with the basic narrative/idea for a film
  • They then find a way to make that idea/narrative interesting and grabbing for an audience
  • A company then invests with buying the rights to the film
  • A team is then brought together to make and direct the actual film screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew
  • The film is made and perfected then sent of to the studio
  • The studio and the distribution company then join an agreement,
  • The distribution company decides how many copies of the film is to be made
  • The distributors then screen the film to the potential buyers
  • Both the buyers and the distribution company negotiate and handle the leasing agreements
  • The perfected print copies are sent to the theatres a number of weeks before the official opening day
  • The theatre then views the film for specified length of time, called an engagement period.
  • The Audience then buy the ticket and get to watch the film
  • At the end of the engagement, the print is sent back to the distributors where a lease agreement payment is made.

2: What is film distribution? Write a careful explanation.

  • Film distribution is the process where basic idea of the film actually becomes the film and is made available for the audience to watch the lease agreement, the negotiating, the finance.

3: What was the Hollywood 'studio system' in the 1930's and 40's?

  • During these years the Hollywood system was created by five major studios known to the public as the Big Five which includes studios such as MGM, 20th century fox, Warner Bros, Paramount and lastly RKO Radio pictures. This meant that this companies would invest a great deal of money to recruit groom and stars who possessed the talent potential, this meant that ordinary people could become stars in up coming movies.

4: In what ways is the process of film production, distribution and exhibition different today?

  • The way the whole industry of film has changed over the years is major and this is mainly through the mass development of technology and the fast updating of new technology in which films can be made quicker then before and with a much higher standard or quality, and example of this would be Avatar which even 30 years back would not have been seen as possible. yet this evolution of technology comes with its negatives for the screening industries as so much is now available through the internet, with free movie websites that can be watched at home which is now major competition for cinema's as films can be watched else where and blockbusters because audiences no longer have to wait for the legal release of a film in order to see it.
